Tacoma Roots

Tacoma Roots

By Mary Mann

Recent paintings by Mary Mann explore the relationship between nature, people, and place. The organic form of trees and their complex root systems embody the ties that bind a community. Growing together and apart, there is strength found in unity.

Roots anchor us to our histories and families. Tacoma landmarks ground this work in a specific place while inviting reflection on the balance between isolation and connection, growth and decay.

Artist Bio:

Mary Mann is a Tacoma-based painter whose current body of work reflects on themes of

connection, resilience, and individuality within community. Her detailed landscapes draw from

the forests and shorelines of the Pacific Northwest, where she finds ongoing inspiration in

science and the natural world.

Trained at the Colorado Institute of Art, Mann began her career as an illustrator and muralist,

completing large-scale public and private commissions. While her roots in community-based

projects remain strong—often involving youth collaboration and public engagement—her studio

practice now centers on introspective, symbolic compositions that invite viewers to consider the

emotional and relational parallels between people and the natural environment.
